While many may initially think execution is a “no-brainer,” the global corporate world has been plagued with leaders lacking this mentality and aptitude for getting things done.
Execution simply depicts the ability to facilitate the plans of the organization per time. However, in running businesses, leadership goes beyond possessing entrepreneurial or commercial skills to exhibiting a strong capability to execute. This line of thinking is also endorsed by Professor John Adair, the world’s foremost Professor of Leadership in his quote “Our position as a manager is confirmed by the organization, but our role as a leader is ratified in the hearts and minds of those whom we lead.” Survey after survey show that, at the very least, 80% of employees believe in the need for a strong leader saying it gives them confidence. Almost everyone manages to skillfully overlook the importance of leadership and how its lack can affect the successful running of a company.īut leadership is important and effective leadership skills are necessary whether you are at the helm of affairs of an established company or startup. Many frameworks exist to help decipher how structurally attractive a business or sector is, and when a business fails, it is usually attributed to stiff operating environments, insufficient funding, heavy government regulations and presence or mismatches between product offerings and customer demands. On the continent, businesses are established everyday but not every initialized business becomes an establishment. Currently on a trajectory to an economic renaissance which will necessarily impact on every other area, Africa must develop quality leadership that can steer its ship to a harbour of inclusive prosperity. In Africa, leadership rings many bells, primarily because the state of stark under-development of the continent has been traced to a lack of visible and visionary leaders who are more concerned about the state of the land than their pockets. The subject of leadership has evolved over a few hundred years as the world continues to change in fundamental ways.
